Pay Gap Reporting 'Worth a Conversation', Says Man Declining to Commit to One

Asked whether companies should be required to report their pay gap data, Christopher Luxon said the idea was “worth a conversation”. He did not commit to a policy, a timeframe, or the conversation itself, but confirmed its worth in principle, the way one might appraise a painting without buying it.

“Worth a conversation” joins a distinguished family of political phrases, alongside “watching it closely” and “not ruling anything out”, that allow a leader to be photographed adjacent to an issue without touching it. National points to its broader initiatives as evidence of its position, and the broader initiatives point back.

Anyone waiting on pay transparency is encouraged to check back after the conversation has taken place. Attendance is expected to be light.
