Defence Ministry Prices Strike Drones at Somewhere Between $100 Million and $300 Million Each

Defence Minister Chris Penk has announced New Zealand will procure long-range strike drones and unarmed surveillance aircraft, with each capability costed at somewhere between $100 million and $300 million. That is a $200 million margin per item, which is either admirably honest budgeting or a placeholder for a number nobody has settled on yet.

Penk framed the purchase around unpredictability abroad, saying “we cannot have prosperity without security” as the international environment grows less certain. The pricing appears to share that outlook. A request for information will go to industry shortly, and market research on the surveillance aircraft begins this week, ahead of a final figure that could land anywhere across a $200 million range.

The Government notes over 80 percent of Defence’s $2.6 billion operating budget is already spent within New Zealand, offered as reassurance the money stays local, wherever within that $200 million bracket it ultimately lands. Taxpayers are invited to consider the range itself a form of transparency.
